Thompson Rivers University plans to build new student housing on land across from campus.

A development permit application to city council this week reveals an 80-unit, four-story dormitory-style building planned for 704 McGill Road. The area is located across from Summit Drive.

The building is proposed to have 68 twin rooms and 12 one-bedroom dormitories, for a total of 148 beds.

Thirty-eight vehicle parking spaces and 40 bicycle parking spaces will also be included, as well as an outdoor amenity area with picnic tables and benches.

According to a report presented to council on Tuesday, the university will build a 3.6 meter wide multi-use path to connect Summit Drive and Dalgleish Drive. Councilors have in the past expressed a desire to improve active transportation and connectivity around the university. The city is also seeking grants to help build an overpass in this area.

Plans for the property potentially include up to three new buildings, for a total of 280 units. The permit currently under consideration concerns the first building.

Thompson Rivers University has faced challenges in finding student housing late, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, limited student housing on campus, and a lack of available rentals in the city.
