UPDATE: Smeltekop Selected as Ashland’s Director of Student Services

in full disclosure, the following is a press release from the Ashland School District

ASHLAND — The Ashland School Board voted unanimously to appoint Brittany Smeltekop as the district’s new director of student services, pending contract negotiations last night, March 7.

Smeltekop will succeed Kathy Silva, who is retiring after 11 years with Ashland Public Schools.

“We are very pleased to appoint Smeltekop as the next Director of Student Services,” said Laurie Tosti, Ashland School Board Chair. “Comment from community, staff and trustee meetings has been universally positive, and after our committee met with her, we agreed that she was the best choice for our district,” Tosti said.

The vote was 5-0.

The Director of Student Services reports to the superintendent and oversees the district’s special education services and procedures.

Currently, approximately 17% of APS students receive special education services.

For the past two years, Smeltekop, a Certified Special Education Administrator for All Grades, has worked with special education students as a Team Chair for Ashland Public Schools.

Previously, she served as Vice-Principal of Ashburnham Westminster Regional School District.

Smeltekop’s selection is the result of a months-long research process that produced diverse candidates from numerous states, three of which were selected as finalists.

She will take up her new role in July 2022.

Ashland Public Schools is a forward-thinking district located in Ashland, serving nearly 3,000 K-12 students in five schools.
