The Center for Academic Success & Tutoring (CAST) offers learning support programs to ensure high quality services for students at Montclair State University. Quality learning focuses on the student as an individual. Therefore, CAST continues to build a body of work focused on the academic needs of a rapidly growing student body.
The center, certified by the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA), offers tutoring, further education and academic development services. In addition, the national and international professional standards set by CRLA are maintained through the application of innovative learning theories, tutoring practices and intercultural training programs.
CAST is dedicated to providing an environment that fosters learning and professional growth where students and tutors work together to achieve their academic goals. Individual and group tutoring sessions are offered in most academic fields by masters and peer tutors who have excelled in their particular fields and have been recommended by faculty. All tutors are trained in effective study strategies and tutoring techniques to best support students.
The Center for Academic Success & Tutoring (CAST) offers academic development, tutoring, additional teaching and learning support services to Montclair students in collaboration with academic and administrative departments, as well as the assessment of freshmen and some transfer students for course placement.

The centre’s mission
- Offer comprehensive learning support programs to encourage academic excellence and help students develop the skills necessary to become independent learners.
- Provide a cohesive assessment system that integrates placement in reading, writing and math in English using multiple criteria to meet the University’s needs for optimal assessment; serve as an effective monitoring site for internal and external testing.
One of the main objectives of the Center for Academic Success (ASC) is to provide quality tutoring services to students of Montclair State University. Students are encouraged to take advantage of ASC tutoring which promotes active learning, reasoning, and critical thinking. The application of active learning processes and study skills is introduced during tutoring sessions related to the tutored subject. Additionally, tutors working at ASC are well trained to apply learning strategies and tutoring techniques to help students become more confident and competent learners while facing academic challenges and mastering the content of the courses. Classes.
The Center publishes the tutoring program at the start of the semester and we encourage students to register for a tutoring account to take advantage of the ability to schedule tutoring appointments in person and online at our various tutoring centers.
Hours and locations of tutoring
- Saturday to Thursday: 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. (hours vary by location)
- Friday: 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.
- Locations: Webster room, rooms 200A, 300A, Bohn room 1001 and Dinallo room, room 2151
Assessment and testing
The Academic Success Center (ASC) coordinates all assessments and evaluations associated with placement tests; students are placed by a counselor in appropriate foreign language and math courses after a review of their academic records and placement test results by the ASC.
The CSA also administers the math preparation tests, the chemistry preparation test for students and coordinates services with English as a second language. Supervision services for MSU and non-MSU students are also available through this office.
